Wow!! I have desired one of the “Famous African Skirts” for a while now. I was in love with the beauty of the pattern. On a recent trip to Harlem, New York, I found a fabric store with tons of beautiful batik fabric. I was in awe of the assortment of prints. After a few hours in the fabric store, I found the print that I was looking for, a beautiful pink and orange base color.
The design was a basic gathered long skirt with a waist band. Sometimes the challenge of working with prints is that process of matching the patterns. With a little patience I made it happen!
Step 1: Cut fabric to the size and desired pattern style – Cut 2 long rectangles – Cut 2 small rectangles the size of your waist
Step 2: Gather the top of skirt
– The skirt should be gathered to the size of your waist
– Sew 2 loose strings across the top of skirt
– Pull String to gather waist to the desired waist size
Step 3: Sew long sides of rectangle skirt
Step 4: Attached waist band to the top of gathered skirt – add button or hook
Step 5: Hem bottom of skirt, then ready to wear
Material: Cotton Batik

Any suggestions of where I might get similar fabric in the DC area? Or can you share the name of the store you purchased yours from?

They have some wonderful fabric stores in Langley Park, MD. I like to go to Vina Fabrics, Jo Anns & G street Fabrics. This particular fabric was purchased in Harlem, NY.
