5 Tips for a Closet Cleanse

It’s that time of year for spring cleaning.  One of the best places to begin is your closet.  Preparing for a new season and packing away the old bulky items from winter.  Cleaning out a space makes room for clarity and new beginnings.  Your closet probably holds many pieces that have never been worn and may still have the purchase tags.

Clear out and color coordinate your closet to make it more manageable and easy to locate clothing.  A beautifully organized closet can save you time, help distress and add peace of mind.

Tips to closet organization

Purge:  Cleanse the space of all items which you no longer wear, no longer fit and are out of style.  Use a extra clothing rack to hang your extra clothing on while you sort through what will go and what will stay.  If you have items in your closet that you have not worn in five years, it may be time to part ways.  Clothes that are too small must go, and clothing that is too large but you love it may be a great DIY upcycle project.   Use an extra rack to organize the keepers.

Color and Style Coordinate:  Organize your closet by color and or style.  Take similar style shirts with the same color, shapes, pattern and size and place together.  I like to organize my closet by style sections, keeping skirts, dresses, tops and pants are all cohesive.

Sell Items / Donate: Sell or donate your items which you no longer use.  There are plenty of companies who take donations and business storefronts and online to sell your clothing.  A few suggestions are below:

  1. Donate Clothing to your local Salvation Army, Shelter or Thrift Store
  2. Sale Items Online :

Hangers / folding roll :  The right hangers are essential for hanging clothing.  Hanging clothing shortest to longest may help the clothing hang better, easy to locate and add a clean feeling to your closet.  Folding t- shirts neatly and vertically placing them in your drawers so that you can see the shirt.  Fold denim and place on shelves horizontally.  Fold or roll your scarves to add extra room for accessories.

Seasons:  Categorize  clothing by seasons.  Place winter sweaters and bulky clothing in vacuum bags, zip tight in store under your bed or storage space.  Drop off coats and clothing of the cleaners, for a good cleaning.  Any clothing that you do not plan to wear… Purge!!

Good luck with your closet cleanse.  It is great to perform a thorough cleaning a few times a year.  Believe me, you will feel great in a clean, organized space. Closet image via Style
